For our visitors new and old, let's catch you up to date. The property across from Winn Dixie on Main Street in
Trussville was put up for sale by the Estate of Dr. Frances Dew Hamilton. This property adjoins the neighborhood
known as Dew Gardens and is very prominent upon entrance into Downtown Trussville.
Earlier this year developers requested to have the property rezoned from R2 Residential to a combination of C2 Commercial and RG Garden Homes. A conceptual plan
was handed out that showed a gas station on Main Street, a new Board of Education building, other commercial lots
and 40+ garden homes that would take over the entirety of what is currently mostly green space.
The developers' plan was to completely level the entire property, to cut down the mature trees that provide a natural buffer between
busy Highway 11 and this family friendly neighboorhood, and which is a habitat for wildlife including owls, hawks,
and other woodland creatures. A grass roots effort was launched to make the residents of Trussville aware of the
situation, BEFORE the bulldozers arrived to level one of the last remaining green spaces in Downtown Trussville.
Through this website and a companion Facebook page called
STOP DEVELOPMENT ACROSS FROM WINN DIXIE IN DOWNTOWN TRUSSVILLE
,
and many concerned citizens, the Trussville Planning & Zoning Board heard the wishes of Trussville residents and
recommended to the City Council to deny the rezoning request.
The developers went back to the drawing board and came back to Planning & Zoning with a plan that better suited the
overall image of Trussville as a place of QUALITY LIVING. A community park with walking trails, a conservation plan
to save the mature trees and wildlife habitat, no crowded housing development. A MUCH BETTER PLAN!
Which brings us to our current situation. On July 9th, the Trussville City Council will meet to decide on the future
of The Hamilton Property. It is incumbent upon us, the Citizens of Trussville, to make heard our voices, our concerns,
our hopes for our city and this unique property that residents and visitors see when entering Downtown Trussville.
